'Tis the season for proper grammar!

Avoid Apostrophe Mistakes

A common error is misusing apostrophes in family names. When signing, skip the apostrophe unless indicating possession. To make a last name plural, add an "s" for most last names. Add an "es" for last names ending in "s", "ch", "sh", "x", or "z".

Correct: The Hayeses or The Hayes Family
Incorrect: The Hayes’s or The Hayes’

Correct: The Frenches or The French Family
Incorrect: The French’s or The Frenchs’

Correct: Merry Christmas from the Johnsons
Incorrect: Merry Christmas from the Johnson’s

The phrase "Season's Greetings" is popular way to end a greeting card with well wishes. However, the apostrophe is commonly missed. Remember, the "greeting" belongs to the "season" so an apostrophe is required.

Correct: Season's Greetings
Incorrect: Seasons Greetings

Common Grammar Pitfalls

Even small grammar choices make a big difference on your holiday card. Using the right format of words keeps your message clear, warm, and polished.

Its/It’s: It’s (it is) the most wonderful time of the year.
Your/You’re: We hope you’re (you are) surrounded by love this Christmas.
There/They’re/Their: Connor & Mia are seniors this year! They’re (they are) both attending USD this fall.

Commas and Oxford Commas, Oh My!

Including the Oxford comma (the one before and) is a matter of preference. If your family prefers a clean, modern design - skip it. If you love tradition - keep it.

Correct: Love, John, Mary, Ella, and Max
Correct: Love, John, Mary, Ella and Max

Both are correct!

Proofread Your Card

Nothing takes away from a beautiful photo card faster than a misplaced apostrophe or wrong name. Before you hit “Submit,” take a few minutes to proofread your design. Look for:

Misspelled names, especially kids or pets (yes, it happens!)
Correct year
Missing punctuation, especially the apostrophe
Consistent capitalization
