Congrats Class of 2026 Graduates! Part 1 of 4

by Harold's Photo / March 5, 2026

Graduation season is exciting, emotional, and (let’s be honest) a little overwhelming, especially when you’re the mom of a high school senior. Between graduation announcements, planning an open house, pulling together photos from every stage of their life, and trying not to cry every time you look at their baby pictures, there’s a lot going on!

To help make it all feel a little easier (and a lot more meaningful), we sat down with Julie, a mom of a graduating senior boy, to talk about what this season really feels like and how personalized photo products can help bring the celebration to life. From open house planning and decor ideas to keepsakes she’ll treasure long after graduation day, Julie shares her honest thoughts, helpful tips, and favorite ways to make this milestone unforgettable.

In this 4-part series, we're discussing general graduation & open house planning.

Q. How are you feeling about your child graduating from high school?

A. Oh my gosh...I’m feeling everything. I’m so proud of him - like, I look at this almost-grown young man and I can’t believe he’s the same kid who used to lose his shoes in the house every single day. But at the same time, it’s emotional in a way I didn’t expect. High school just goes by so fast.

One minute you’re packing lunches and driving them to practice, and the next you’re looking at graduation announcements and thinking, “Wait… how is this real?”

I’m excited for him, but I’m also trying to soak up every last moment - and I think that’s why I’m putting so much love into his graduation open house. It feels like this big milestone for our whole family, not just him.

Q. What are your plans for their graduation open house?

A. I feel like an open house party is one of those “once in a lifetime” things, and I don’t want to look back and wish we had celebrated more.

We’re planning to host it at our house so it feels relaxed and comfortable. He’s not the type who wants a big formal party - but he does want to see people, eat good food, and be surrounded by family and friends.

My plan is to keep it simple but really meaningful with lots of photos out, his sport & accedemic achievements, and a few standout pieces from Harold’s Photo like a big photo poster collage, a yard sign, and a graduation announcement that feels like him.

And I know for sure I want a setup where guests can walk through and really see his journey - baby pictures, sports, school stuff, all the way up to his senior photos.

Q. Do you have a theme planned or sticking with school colors?

A. I’m mostly sticking with school colors - it just makes everything feel cohesive without me having to overthink it, especially with his sports uniforms.

But I am adding a little personality to it too, because with boys (especially senior boys!) you kind of have to make the party feel like them, not like a Pinterest wedding.

So I’m doing a mix of:
  • School colors for the main decor (tablecloths, plates, balloons)
  • His senior photos as the real “theme”
  • A few personalized touches like a custom yard sign and a big photo display of photographs printed from Harold’s Photo that ties everything together

I feel like when you have good photos and a few well-done printed pieces, the whole open house instantly looks more put together - even if you’re scrambling the night before (which I absolutely will be).

Q. What kind of decorations or keepsakes are most important for celebrating this milestone?

A. For me, the most important decorations are the ones that feel personal - the kind where people walk in and immediately go, “Oh my gosh… I remember when he did that!”

I love the cute party stuff, but what really matters is having:
  • A big photo display (like a poster or collage) that shows his senior year and some childhood highlights
  • Printed photos around the house so it feels warm and real - not just digital
  • A yard sign out front so it feels like a celebration before people even walk in
  • And a guest book or large poster guests can sign, because I know I’ll treasure that later

I’m also a sucker for keepsakes that don’t just get thrown away afterward - like a canvas print or a framed photo that I can hang up at home after the party. That’s why I love ordering from Harold’s Photo for this kind of thing - it’s not just “party decor,” it becomes part of what we keep forever.

Graduation season is one of those moments that feels like it arrives overnight - but it’s also a reminder of just how many memories are packed into the years leading up to it. For Julie, celebrating her senior boy isn’t just about the ceremony or the open house… it’s about honoring the journey and sharing it with the people who helped shape him along the way.
